MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois Softball dropped both games against Eastern Illinois despite strong offensive performances from several Leathernecks.
In game one, Western Illinois fell 8-2. The Leathernecks totaled 10 hits, with Payton Brown and Megan Leonard each collecting two. Maria Luna delivered the team's offensive highlight, launching a solo home run in the fifth inning. Lillie Wools also added two hits, while RyLee German recorded a double. Eastern Illinois capitalized on key opportunities and consistent contact at the plate, building a lead that the Leathernecks couldn't overcome.
Wools got the start in the circle for WIU in game one, with Audrey Clark and Kaelyn Walters providing support out of the bullpen.
In game two, Payton Brown had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, and an RBI. Sophia Sanchez got the Leathernecks on the board first with a two-run single in the third inning, and Kaylee Ketcherside and Megan Leonard each scored a run.
Kaitlyn Green threw a complete game, striking out four in the process. After shutting out the Panthers through the first five innings, a six-run burst in the final two frames sealed the win for EIU.
With the losses, the Leathernecks are now officially out of postseason contention and will look to finish the season on a high note in Sunday's series finale against Eastern Illinois. .
