WIU Baseball Falls In Opener At EIU

CHARLESTON, Ill- Leatherneck Baseball fell in the first game of their three game series with Eastern Illinois by a score of 13-8 on Thursday afternoon. The Panthers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second, and added on to their lead in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 10-0 lead heading into the seventh. 

The Leathernecks, who up until the eighth inning, had just two hits and five total base runners for the contest. In the top of the eighth, Chris Hege and Liam Bushey would both walk followed by a Krayton Morse single to load the bases with one out in the inning. Paul Osting would then draw a bases loaded walk to bring in the first run of the game for WIU to make it a 10-1 game. Kenneth Sugi would then pinch hit for Matt Olive, and would get hit by a pitch which then led to Kenneth Perez getting a two-out walk later in the inning to make it a 10-3 game. With two outs and the bases loaded, Brock Lummus would get an RBI single up the middle to score Osting making it a 10-4 game. Kyree Alexander would then get a hold of one and send it out of the ball park for a grand slam to cut the Panther lead to two at 10-8. 

With a comeback looming for the Leathernecks, EIU would score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to end the WIU comeback and would go on to win the game 13-8. The Leathernecks were led offensively by Krayton Morse, who went 2-5 with two singles. 

WIU is back in action late tomorrow morning as the second game as been moved up to 11 AM. With two games to go in the regular season, the Leathernecks are currently one game out of the final spot in the conference tournament.
