MACOMB, Ill. – The WIU tennis team continues their hot run as they secure a win over the Eastern Illinois Panthers moving to 3-1 in conference play.
The Leathernecks won two in doubles play and left the third unfinished. At the No. 1 the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Richardlyne Francois looked unstoppable, earning a 6-0 win over their opponents. The team of Chloé Routier and Mana Fawcett started off cold at the No. 2 but left their match unfinished due to clinch. Paige Grice and Lara Souza did not see action in doubles due to forfeit by EIU, earning Western the opening point of the match.
In singles play, Fawcett earned the win by forfeit at No. 6 to earn Western their second point of the match. at No. 3 Grice was the first to finish, winning the first set 6-3 and earning the win due retirement from injury by her opponent. At No. 1, Francois was dominant, winning the first set 6-1, and clinching the match for Western with a 6-1 win in the second set. Gueblaoui played at No. 5 finding her groove and taking both sets. In her first set, Nour scored 6-0 and took her match in the second with a score of 6-2.
Souza faced a tough opponent at No. 4, dropping both sets with a score of 4-6, 0-6. The final match of the day belonged to Routier, taking three sets to finish. Chloé dropped the first set 1-6, but managed to take the second 7-5 leading to a 10 point tiebreaker. The third set was back and forth, ultimately going to the visiting opponent with a score of 7-10 and bringing the overall score to 5-2 in favor of the Leathernecks.
WIU Tennis travels to St. Charles Monday April 7 to face the Lindenwood Lions.
