ST. CHARLES, MO. – The WIU tennis team extended their winning streak to three straight victories in conference play after a strong showing against Lindenwood to secured the second seed.
In doubles action, the Leathernecks dropped two of the three matchups. At No. 1, the duo of Nour Gueblaoui and Richardlyne Francois continued their dominant run with a solid 6-3 win. At No. 2, Chloé Routier and Mana Fawcett battled hard, taking their match to a tiebreaker before narrowly falling 6-7 (7-9). Paige Grice and Lara Souza faced difficulties at No. 3, falling 0-6, which handed the doubles point to Lindenwood.
Western Illinois bounced back in singles play, where Francois fought through a gritty three-set match. After dropping the first set 5-7, she responded with a 7-5 win in the second and clinched the victory with a 10-7 third set. At No. 2, Routier rebounded from her previous outing, dominating the first set 6-1 and edging out the second in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4). Grice followed with an impressive performance at No. 3, cruising to a 6-0, 6-4 win to give WIU a 3-1 lead.
At No. 4, Souza played a competitive first set but came up short, 5-7. She was unable to recover in the second, falling 3-6. Gueblaoui delivered another thrilling three-set match at No. 5. After dropping the first set 1-6, she stormed back with a 6-2 win in the second and closed it out 6-4 in the third. To wrap up the match, Fawcett secured a straight-set victory at No. 6, taking the first in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4) and finishing strong with a 6-2 second set.
With the 5-2 team win, the Leathernecks continue their momentum heading deeper into conference play.
WIU Tennis returns home for senior day Saturday April 12 to face the Tennessee State Tigers.
