Leathernecks Fall in Doubleheader at Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Western Illinois Softball fell in both games of its Sunday, April 27th, doubleheader against Morehead State, despite strong offensive performances from several Leathernecks.

In Game 1, Western Illinois was defeated 16-6 in a five-inning contest. The Leathernecks recorded 11 hits, led by Payton Brown's 3-for-4 performance, including a double. Ruby Tarr added two hits and an RBI, while Lillie Wools drove in two runs. Sophia Sanchez scored twice and collected an RBI with a sacrifice fly. Although WIU's offense started strong, defensive miscues and struggles in the circle allowed Morehead State to pull away.

In Game 2, the Leathernecks came up just short in a 6-5 loss. Brown once again led the charge, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, and an RBI. Jillian Morris knocked in a run with a double, and Sanchez tallied two RBIs between a single and a sacrifice. Rylee Boone added a pinch-hit single. Audrey Clark started in the circle, throwing 2.1 innings, while Kathryn McChristy pitched 3.2 innings in relief.

As a team, Western Illinois totaled 17 hits and scored 11 runs over the two games but couldn't overcome Morehead State's late-game execution.

Western Illinois moves to 11-34 overall and 7-17 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Leathernecks will look to regroup and close out the regular season on a strong note next weekend May 3-4 against Eastern Illinois University.
