Leatherneck Baseball Falls In Doubleheader At SEMO

GAPE GIRARDEAU, MO-  WIU baseball fell in both games at SEMO on Friday afternoon by scores of 12-1 and 6-5.

In game one, the Leathernecks committed five errors which allowed SEMO to take control of the game. Matt Olive had a lead off home run in the top of the fourth to score the only WIU run in game one. Olive finished the first game 1-3 at the plate to lead the way offensively. On the mound, starter Max Tripure threw four innings allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits, while striking out four.

In game two, the Leathernecks jumped out quickly to a two run lead in the top of the first with Matt Olive reaching on an error that allowed Liam Bushey to score, and Krayton Morse grounding into a double play to score Olive. SEMO would respond with six unanswered runs to take a 6-2 lead after four innings.

WIU would mount a comeback in the last three innings, with Kyree Alexander hitting a solo home run to left field in the top of the seventh, and Brock Lummus hitting an opposite field two-run home run to right in the top of the eighth to cut into the Redhawks lead making it 6-5. In the ninth, WIU would go down in order and would fall by a final score of 6-5 in game two.

Jorge Romero had a season-high 6 K's out of the bullpen throwing four innings allowing only two hits. Offensively, Lummus and Alexander led the Leathernecks both going 2-4 with a home run.

The Leathernecks will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for the final game against SEMO. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
