WIU Tennis Records Clean Sweep At Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. – Following a 3-4 loss to UW-Milwaukee this weekend, the Leatherneck tennis team bounced back with a statement 7-0 win over Chicago State.

WIU won all three doubles matches to claim the opening point. The No. 1 the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Chloé Routier had no trouble with their opponents, as they took the match with a score of 6-2. Paige Grice and Mana Fawcett played at the No. 2, breezing past their opponents with a score of 6-0. Finally, Lara Souza and Richardlyne Francois earned an automatic win due to no opponents playing at the No. 3 for Chicago State.

Singles play was nothing but dominance for the Leathernecks, as they secured the win in all six spots. Routier started things off at No. 1, making quick work of her opponent and finishing the match in two sets with a score of 6-1 and 6-0. At the No. 2, Grice made it look easy, finishing off her opponent in the second set and securing the point for WIU with scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Francois displayed her dominance at No. 3, while shutting her opponent out in two sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-0. Gueblaoui continued the shutout for Western, ending her match in two sets with another dominant performance scoring 6-0 in both sets.

Anna Trush returned from injury in dominant fashion, cruising past her opponent in two sets with scores of 6-0 and 6-0. Denver Johnson also made her return from injury, but did not have to play as Chicago State left the No.6 vacant, earning WIU the point. This lead to a final match score of 7-0 in favor of the Leathernecks.

WIU Tennis will travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina, for the Spring Tennis Fest playing their next match on Sunday, March 9, to take on Berry College.
