Leatherneck Baseball Falls in Series Finale At Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, ALA-  Western Illinois put up a fight but fell short against Alabama State in a 9-7 loss on Sunday afternoon.

WIU (2-6) got off to a slow start, but a four-run fifth inning helped them take the lead midway through the game. Tyler Large had an RBI single to start the big inning for the Leathernecks, followed by a Paul Osting bunt single to give WIU a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth. The Leathernecks would add two more in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Justin Bogard followed by a SAC bunt from Trevor Leon extending the lead for WIU at 6-2.

Large would have a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Kyree Alexander also came through in clutch moments, driving in three runs with a pair of hits.

On the mound, Frederick Romano started strong for the Leathernecks, striking out six over six innings while allowing three runs. He kept Alabama State (5-7) in check early, but things unraveled late when the Hornets' offense came alive. The Hornets chipped away with runs in the sixth and seventh before erupting for four in the eighth inning to get the win.

Despite the loss, WIU's offense showed signs of life with 10 hits and solid performances from Large and Alexander. The Leathernecks will look to bounce back in their next matchup for their home opener on Tuesday against Northwest Missouri State. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
