HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The WIU tennis team comes up short in a hard fought battle against South Carolina State University.
The Leathernecks dropped two in doubles play and left the third unfinished. At the No. 1 the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Chloé Routier played a tough match but suffered a 1-6 loss. The team of Paige Grice and Mana Fawcett faced a tough team at the No. 2 but ultimately suffered a 1-6 loss. Anna Trush and Richardlyne Francois looked promising but did not finish their match leaving the score at 1-5 giving SC State the opening point.
In singles play, Grice stepped up to No. 2 but suffered a loss with a score of 2-6, 1-6. Fawcett played at No. 3, but fell short, suffering a 2-6, 2-6 loss. Trush returned from injury playing at No.6 but ultimately suffered a loss with a score 2-6 and 1-6 giving SC State a 0-4 win.
At No. 1, Routier went to work on her opponent leaving her match unfinished with a score of 4-6, 2-3. Francois played at No. 4 taking the first set 6-3 but leaving her match unfinished with a score of 2-1 in the second set. Gueblaoui played at No. 5 dropping the first set 2-6 and leaving the second set unfinished with a score of 4-4.
WIU Tennis stays on the road for their next two, facing George Mason Thursday March 13 and open conference play Saturday March 15 at Southern Indiana.
