MILWAUKEE, WI. – The WIU tennis team had a hard fought battle but fell short with an overall score of 3-4 against Milwaukee.
The Leathernecks dropped all three in doubles play. At the No. 1 the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Chloé Routier played a tough match but suffered a 1-6 loss. The team of Paige Grice and Mana Fawcett played at the No. 2 but suffered a 1-6 loss. Lara Souza and Richardlyne Francois looked promising but ultimately fell short with a score of 2-6.
Singles play was an absolute war going back and forth the entire match with multiple tiebreakers. Routier started off strong playing the No. 1 but suffered a tough 3-6, 3-6 loss. At the No. 2, Souza had one of three tiebreaker matches of the day with the first and second set score being 7-5 and 0-6. On set three, Souza went back and forth losing a close set in heartbreak fashion with a score of 6-7 (7-9). Grice took her opponent to a tiebreaker first set at the No. 2 taking the set 7-6 (3-1). Paige finished off her opponent in the second set securing the first win for WIU at the No. 3. Fawcett played a three set match at the No. 4 dropping the first set 4-6 and bouncing back in the second set with a score of 6-3, but could not secure the third set with a score of 3-6. Francois continued her strong play at the No. 5 playing the last tiebreaker set of the match taking the first set 7-6 (4-2) and making quick work in the second set earning a 6-1 win. Nour finished things off on a high note making quick work of her match at No. 6. Gueblaoui looked dominant in her two set win recording a dominant 6-1 first set and 6-3 second set.
WIU Tennis looks to bounce back on the road Sunday March 2nd as they face the Chicago State Cougars.
