DEKALB, Ill. – The WIU Tennis team put up a valiant effort but ultimately came up short in a 0-7 loss to Northern Illinois University.
The Leathernecks dropped two in doubles play and decided to not finish the third match due to a clinch. At the No. 1 the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Chloé Routier had a back and forth match but came up short, suffering a 5-7 loss. Lara Souza and Richardlyne Francois started strong but suffered a 4-6 loss to end doubles play. The team of Paige Grice and Mana Fawcett looked promising but did not finish their match leaving the score at 5-6 earning NIU the point.
In singles play, Routier played the No. 1 where she suffered a 4-6, 2-6 loss against a tough opponent. Souza played the No. 2 but fell short, losing 3-6, 1-6. Grice played a two set thriller at No. 3, ultimately losing 6-7 (2-7), and 4-6. Fawcett suffered a 2-6, 3-6 loss at No. 4. Gueblaoui dropped both sets at No. 5 scoring 1-6, and 3-6. Anna Trush took over the No. 6 but came up short in two sets scoring 2-6 and 0-6.
The Leathernecks will look to turn things around as they host Creighton University February 15.
