MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's tennis team comes up short in a hard fought battle against Creighton University.
The Leathernecks dropped two in doubles play and decided to not finish the third match due to a clinch. At the No. 1 the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Chloé Routier had a back and forth match but came up short, suffering a 2-6 loss. Lara Souza and Anna Trush started strong but suffered a 3-6 loss to end doubles play. The team of Paige Grice and Mana Fawcett looked promising but did not finish their match leaving the score at 4-4 earning Creighton the point.
Creighton struck first in singles play, picking up wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Routier started things off at the No. 1 but fell short suffering a 1-6, 2-6 loss.At the No. 2 was Souza who faced a tough opponent ultimately suffering a 2-6, 3-6 loss at No. 2. Fawcett had an intense three set thriller but came up short with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-7(3). Trush the at No. 6 spot, but suffered a heartbreaking 4-6, 4-6 loss.
It was not all bad as Grice managed to pull out the win in a three set war at No. 3 with a final score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Gueblaoui finished things off on a high note for the Leathernecks earning a 7-6(5), 3-6, and 10-8 victory at the No. 5 spot.
Western Illinois will travel to St. Louis to take on St. Louis University on February 21.
