MACOMB, Ill. – The WIU tennis team came out victorious in St. Louis, etching out the win with an overall score of 4-3.
In doubles play, the Leathernecks were off to a hot start, winning two. At the No. 1 the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Chloé Routier faced a tough pair, but came out on top with a score of 6-2. The team of Paige Grice and Mana Fawcett came out victorious in quick fashion winning their match with a score of 6-2at the No. 2 giving the Leathernecks an early 1-0 lead. Lara Souza and Richardlyne Francois did not finish their match due to clinching.
In singles play, Francois was first to finish coasting to a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 5 followed by Fawcett with a resounding 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 4. Souza suffered a loss at No. 2 with a score of 2-6 and 2-6. Routier had a three set thriller taking the first set 6-4 and ultimately dropping the last two 2-6 and 0-6. Grice secured the victory for Western finishing her match in three sets with a score of 6-3, 4-6 and closing it out 6-1. Nour took her match to three sets fighting a tough battle, but coming up just short.
WIU Tennis travels to Columbia Saturday February 22 to face the Mizzou Tigers.
