MACOMB, Ill. – The WIU tennis team comes out victorious at home finishing with an overall score of 6-1.
In doubles play, the Leathernecks were quick to get a point on the board, winning two and dropping one. At the No. 1 the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Chloé Routier faced a tough pair, going to war forcing a tiebreaker ultimately suffering a 6-7 (5-7) loss. Lara Souza and Anna Trush made quick work of their opponents in an emphatic 6-2 victory at the No. 3. The team of Paige Grice and Mana Fawcett came out victorious in a close 7-5 victory at the No. 2 giving the Leathernecks an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Grice was first to finish coasting to a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 3 followed by Fawcett with a resounding 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Freshman powerhouse Chloé Routier made a statement in her return from injury with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 1.
Souza had the match of the day with a three set thriller at No. 2 ending with a score of 3-6, 6-4, and finishing off with a hard fought tiebreaker set ending in 7-6 (14-12). Trush finished her match in two sets dropping both with a score of 3-6 and 1-6 at the No. 6. Nour stood tall, dominating the competition in two sets with a score of 6-3 and 6-0 at the No. 5 to bring the overall score of the match to 6-1.
WIU Tennis travels to Dekalb Saturday February 8 to face the Northern Illinois University Huskies.
