Women's Basketball Falls In Season Finale At Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, TN-  The Western Illinois Women's Basketball team fought hard on the road but couldn't overcome Tennessee Tech, falling 68-51 in their final regular-season game Thursday night at the Eblen Center.

Mia Nicastro led WIU with an impressive all-around performance, finishing with 23 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. The Junior forward was the only Leatherneck in double figures, shooting 9-of-16 from the field while also hitting a three-pointer.

The Leathernecks (14-15, 8-12 OVC) struggled offensively, shooting just 38.5% from the field and 18.2% from three-point range for the game. Despite Nicastro's efforts, the Leathernecks couldn't find consistency on offense, committing 17 turnovers that led to 16 Tennessee Tech points.

WIU got off to a slow start, scoring just 11 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second. At halftime, Tennessee Tech led 33-25, as the Leathernecks struggled to hit shots from deep, going 1-of-6 from beyond the arc in the opening half.

Despite their offensive woes, WIU's defense kept them in the game. Madison Davis was active on the glass, tying for a team-high eight rebounds while also dishing out four assists and blocking a shot.

In the third quarter, WIU looked poised for a comeback after a strong defensive effort led by Addi Brownfield, who finished with three steals and six rebounds. However, Tennessee Tech kept the pressure on, extending their lead to 50-38 heading into the fourth.

The Leathernecks continued to battle in the final quarter but couldn't close the gap. WIU finished with 36 total rebounds, six blocks, and eight steals, showing strong defensive efforts despite the offensive struggles.

With the regular season now complete, Western Illinois turns its focus to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, where they'll be taking on the six seed UT Martin on Wednesday at 3 PM.
