Leathernecks Fall In Game Two At New Mexico State

Las Cruces, N.M.- Western Illinois baseball put up a strong fight in a high-scoring contest but ultimately fell to New Mexico State by a score of 10-8 on Saturday night.

The Leathernecks (0-4) opened the game with an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning on a home run by Tyler Large. After New Mexico State responded with two runs in the bottom of the second, the Leathernecks surged ahead again with a three-run fourth, highlighted by Krayton Morse putting the ball in play scoring two runs on a play that resulted in an error by the Aggies.

Despite Western Illinois' offensive efforts, New Mexico Sttae (4-2) answered with a series of multi-run innings, plating three in both the fifth and sixth to take control of the game. The Aggies' offense capitalized on key extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs and a triple.

Large led the Leathernecks at the plate, going 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs. Morse added a key double and two RBIs, while Liam Bushey contributed a pair of hits and an RBI.

On the mound, Harrison Dubois made the start for WIU, tossing 1.2 innings while allowing two earned runs. The bullpen battled through a tough Aggie lineup, with Jason Buhl striking out five in 2.1 innings of relief and Billy Humphrey allowing two runs over two innings.

Western Illinois had opportunities to push across more runs, leaving 16 runners on base for the game. The Leathernecks had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the ninth trailing by two runs, but were unable to score.

WIU will wrap up their series with the Aggies tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12 PM.
