Statement Win: Western Illinois Knocks Off Lindenwood to Earn OVC Tournament Spot

MACOMB, IL — Western Illinois men's soccer capped the regular season with a statement win Saturday afternoon, defeating top-ranked Lindenwood 2–0 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field to clinch a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

The Leathernecks came out sharp against the OVC's top team, setting the tone early with organized defending and efficient counterattacks. Western Illinois struck first in the 25th minute when Liam Gainey converted a penalty kick after a foul in the box, giving WIU a 1–0 advantage.

Goalkeeper Micah Ramirez came up with several key saves in the first half, including stopping a Lindenwood penalty attempt just moments after Gainey's goal to preserve the lead. Ramirez finished with nine saves before being subbed late, combining with Phanuel Gunn for the clean sheet.

In the second half, the Leathernecks added to their lead when Joel McIntyre found the back of the net in the 57th minute, pushing the advantage to 2–0. From there, Western's back line held firm, limiting Lindenwood's chances and securing one of the team's most complete performances of the season.

The shutout marked WIU's fifth win of the year and its third OVC victory, moving the Leathernecks into the conference tournament field.

Next up, Western Illinois advances to the first round of the OVC Tournament, where the Leathernecks will face SIUE on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
