Leathernecks Fall 1-3 to Eastern Illinois in Saturday Afternoon Match

Macomb, IL. – The Western Illinois University men's soccer team dropped a 1-3 decision to in-state rival Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon.

The Leathernecks came out strong, striking first just five minutes into the match. Junior forward Xavier Gagnon netted an early goal at the five-minute mark, giving Western Illinois an early 1-0 lead. Eastern Illinois answered late in the first half, when fifth-year senior midfielder Ben Griffis scored in the 41st minute to even the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.

The Panthers came out of the break with renewed energy and an aggressive offensive push, outshooting the Leathernecks 12-3 in the second half. Their pressure paid off with two second-half goals to secure the 3-1 victory.

With the result, Western Illinois falls to 3-10-4 overall and 1-2-5 in conference play, while Eastern Illinois improves to 4-7-3 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play. The Panthers' win evens the all-time series between the two programs at 4-4-3.

Western Illinois will look to bounce back in its next match as the Leathernecks travel to Edwardsville to face off against the SIUE Cougars on Thursday October 30th at 6 p.m.
