Leatherneck Tennis Posts Strong Performances at Cougar Invite

EDWARDSVILLE, Il. – The Western Illinois University women's tennis program had a successful start to the fall campaign this weekend, pulling off some big wins at the SIUE Cougar Invite.

Paige Grice led the way, going 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.

On Friday, the Leathernecks scored major wins, taking four of six singles matches against Bradley, then winning two of three doubles matches vs. SIUE. Western Illinois fell in their other doubles match, losing two of three to Lindenwood.

In the singles match vs. Bradley, the Leathernecks showed off their new and improved depth, winning at the No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 spots.

At No. 2 singles, Paige Grice picked up a straight-set victory, winning 6-2, 6-2. Western Illinois newcomers then introduced themselves to the program with authority as No. 3 player Chloe Routier won 6-4, 6-4, No. 4 Richardlyne Francois was victorious 6-4, 6-4, and No. 6 player Mana Fawcett won 7-5, 7-5.

Against SIUE, the doubles team of Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Nour Gueblaoui scored a win at No. 1 doubles, triumphing 6-4. The No. 2 team of Fawcett and Grice secured the doubles win with a matching 6-4 victory.

In the match with Lindenwood, Grice and Fawcett completed their perfect Friday with a 6-3 win.

The Leathernecks are now off for two weeks. The squad next heads to Evansville, Indiana for the Ohio Valley Conference Individual Tournament on September 21 and 22.

On Saturday, the Leathernecks opened their day with a 5-1 victory over Lindenwood. Grice and Fawcett continued their perfect weekend, each getting singles wins. Grice won at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-4 while Fawcett won at the No. 5 position, 6-2, 7-5.

Also earning victories for Western Illinois were Routier at No. 3 (6-2, 6-1), Francois at No. 4 (6-2, 6-3), and, in her first action of the weekend Anna-Evelina Trush at No. 6 (6-1, 6-2).

In doubles on Saturday, Bradley swept all three matches against the Leathernecks. In an extra round of play, Bradley took the two singles matches against WIU.

In the final single match of the weekend, Western Illinois fell to SIUE, 5-1. Grice ended her strong weekend on a positive note, scoring the lone Leatherneck win at No. 1 singles, 8-7 (7-5).
