Monmouth, IL - The Western Illinois men's soccer team won their second straight game tonight defeating the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees by a score of 4-2 behind a huge night offensively by Sophomore forward Xavier Gagnon. Gagnon finished the game with 2 goals and 1 assist becoming the first Leatherneck to have a 2-goal game since Daisuke Otsuka on November 14, 2019.
WIU got the offense clicking early on in the game as Xavier Gagnon scored on a cross pass by Oskar Grevelius 3:24 into the game. 12 minutes later, Gagnon would score again to put the Leathernecks up 2-0 after 16 minutes of play. The offense wouldn't be done as they would score again at the 28th minute after two great passes by Gabe Chapa and Oscar Olingdahl led to a goal scored by Oskar Grevelius to put WIU up 3-0. St. Ambrose would respond with two goals in three minutes late in the first half to make it a 3-2 Leatherneck lead at the break.
The second half only saw one goal scored which came in the 61st minute as Xavier Gagnon sent a great pass across the box to Liam Gainey who would put WIU up 4-2. Gagnon is the first Leatherneck to record a 5-point game since Jacob Bevan, who did it against Kansas City in 2016.
WIU is back in action on Sunday as they will be traveling to Highland Heights, Kentucky to square off against Northern Kentucky. The game is scheduled for 12 PM.
