Western Illinois Thrashes Northern Illinois In 4-0 Victory

The Leathernecks picked up their fourth win in the past five games, demolishing the Huskies in Macomb.

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University Men's Soccer looked to carry its positive momentum into a Friday night clash with the Northern Illinois Huskies, a squad who's had the Leathernecks' number over the years, winning the last nine matches. WIU came out swinging, scoring ten minutes in, then keeping their foot on the gas as they added three second-half goals, in an absolute destruction of the Huskies.

WIU freshman forward Ty Duax got on the board first for the Leathernecks in the tenth minute. An incredible goal, Oskar Grevelius played it up to Liam Gainey, who found Duax in the middle of the box, and the freshman put it away off one touch for the first goal of the match.

Western Illinois had a few chances on corners about ten minutes later, but neither were converted. Goalkeeper Alexis Michaud saved his first shot in the fortieth minute and racked up six saves in the second half as he ended up with seven in the shutout victory.

Diego Porras came off the bench and had a couple of chances near the end of the first to double the lead, but the one-nil scoreline held until the halftime whistle.

NIU had a few decent chances to equalize before the second-half hydration break, but the Leatherneck defense and Michaud held strong to keep the shutout going.

After the hydration break, Western Illinois put on a clinic. Benjamin Graham played a great ball in down the left side to Tyler Philpott, and the freshman winger played in a perfect ball to senior Jimmy Baars, who slotted it home for his first goal of the season. The Leathernecks didn't stop there, as Xavier Gagnon broke free on the right wing about ten minutes later, fired a ball in the middle of the field to Diego Porras, and Porras buried it to make it three-nil. Baars added to the party with his second goal of the game, as Liam Gainey intercepted a throw-in, fed it to Baars, and the senior curled it in perfectly to make it four-nil. A statement victory, Western has now one four of their last five matches.

The Leathernecks improve to 4-3-1 on the season with the win and take on IU Indianapolis in the non-conference finale on Tuesday.
