Box Score Grand Forks, ND - The WIU Volleyball team ended the North Dakota Classic with a win sweeping Belmont in three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-19. The Leathernecks were balanced offensively with Brittany Wulf and Elizabeth Ziegler having 13 and 12 kills respectively. Karli Wenzel led the way defensively finishing the match with 30 digs.
In the first set, Belmont jumped out to a 7-3 lead. WIU would respond by going on a 5-0 run to take the lead at 8-7. During the run, Keyana Cruse had 2 kills and Karli Wenzel had a service ace. The Leathernecks would never trail in the set again, going up by as much as 8 at 20-12. Brittany Wulf would have 4 kills in the set as the Leathernecks would go on to take the set 25-19.
In the second set, WIU would again trail 7-3 to start the set. The Leathernecks would go on a 3-0 run that included a Karli Wenzel ace to force a Belmont timeout early. Belmont would come out of the timeout on a 2-0 run to go up 9-6, but WIU would end the Bruin run by going on 3-0 run of their own to tie the set at 9. Later in the set, back-to-back kills by Brittany Wulf and Elizabeth Ziegler would give the Leathernecks a 13-12 lead and WIU would not look back as they would go up by as much as 6 at 19-13. The Leathernecks would end up taking the set 25-20.
In set three, WIU would have 18 kills as a team. Elizabeth Ziegler would have 7 kills in the set to lead the way for the Leathernecks who would take the set 25-19 and sweep Belmont 3-0.
The Leathernecks will travel to Charleston, South Carolina for the Charleston Southern tournament on Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21. WIU will play Charleston Southern and Norfolk State on Friday at 11 AM and 3:30 PM. On Saturday, WIU will play Sacred Heart at 10 AM.
