MACOMB, Ill. – On Monday, June 3, Western Illinois University Athletics hosted the 46th Annual Leatherneck Club Golf Classic at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course in Macomb. Nearly 130 golfers participated in the event, with 32 teams competing in two flights. 

Paul Runser, Jake Mann, Matt Lawver, and Head Women's Basketball Coach J.D. Gravina were declared winners of the Championship Flight with a low gross score of 56. Taking second place on the day in the Championship Flight was a team that included Mike Woodrum, Jeff Mabrey, Mike Eckhardt, and Head Football Coach Joe Davis, also with a low score of 56, short due to the scorecard playoff based upon handicapped holes.

The winning team in the First Flight had to also be determined through a scorecard playoff with multiple teams tied at 66. The team made up of Thom Cornelis, Bob Eckhart, Larry Ziegler, Gary Birch earned first place, while second place in the First Flight was awarded to Carrie Van Vleet, Amy Spelman, Brad Bainter, and Steve Hensley.

Multiple on-course contests were also held throughout the day. Winners are outlined below: 

• Hole 2 - Longest Drive - Men

  • Winner: Mike Thomas

• Hole 7 - Longest Putt - Men

  • Winner: Mike Clemens

• Hole 8 - Closest to the Pin 

  • Winner: Geoff Butler

• Hole 11 - Longest Putt - Women 

  • Winner: Natalie Davis

• Hole 12 - Closest to the Pin 

  • Winner: Tom Conklin

• Hole 14 - Closest to Rocky

  • Winner: Larry Ziegler

• Hole 16 - Longest Drive - Women

  • Winner: Carrie Van Vleet

• Hole 18 - Longest Putt - Men

  • Winner: Tom Shogren

"From the great weather we had on June 3, to the players and sponsors who made the day possible, I say thank you," Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb commented, expressing that the funds raised at the event assist with the cost of operating and maintaining an NCAA Division I athletic program.

The 47th Annual Leatherneck Club Golf Classic has been scheduled for Monday, June 2, 2025.
