Western Drops Doubleheader at SIUE

Western took a pair of losses in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader in Edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE, IL - After a 3-0 win on Friday, the Leathernecks looked to capitalize on the victory with their first series win of the year. SIUE came out swinging in game one and carried their momentum over in the series finale, winning both games.

Game one of the day saw the Cougars get out to a massive early lead. A nine-run frame first all but sealed the game early, as the SIUE bats got seven hits and three walks in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 9-0 lead. Kathryn McChristy came in relief for Raven Morrison with two outs in the frame, and the senior would finish the rest of the game, pitching a season-high three and one-third innings.

Western's lone hit in game one came in the second, as Maria Luna doubled in the top of the second. She represented the final baserunner of the game for the Leathernecks, as Western went down in order for the rest of the game, which ended in five innings. The Cougars tacked on two runs in the third and three in the fourth, winning the game 14-0.

In game two, the Western offense had a more promising start than in game one, as freshman Valerie Combs singled and stole second to get an early runner in scoring position, but she was not brought home. Emily Price got the start inside the circle for Western and got to work with a quick one-two-three inning.

The Western bats wouldn't get another hit until the fourth, but Price did her job well by keeping the Cougars off the board through three. In the top of the fourth, Valerie Combs led off with a line drive hammered to left field, soaring over the wall for the first home run of her Leatherneck career. Gabriela Drager later doubled in the inning, but no runs came across as Western took their one-nothing lead into the bottom of the fourth.

A three-single fourth inning for the Cougars led to SIUE taking back the lead, with two runs coming across. The Leathernecks would answer quickly in the fifth, as Beth Pavy hit a leadoff single. Two productive outs moved her to third, where an infield single from Malia Robertson tied the game at two apiece. SIUE then responded, as a well-hit ball into center got by Robertson, which led to the Cougars clearing the bases and coming all the way around to home to take a 4-2 lead.

Bella Alvarez led off the sixth with a double, but she was not brought home. Price struck out the final two Cougars batters in the sixth as the Leathernecks faced a two-run deficit down to their final three outs. A single and error put two runners on with two outs, but a soft grounder to third ended the game and the series, with the Cougars coming out on top.

Next weekend, the Leathernecks are back at home, taking on Lindenwood in a three-game series from April 13-14.
