| By:
MACOMB – The Western Illinois women's tennis team closes out the season this weekend, playing at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis.

Southeast Missouri claimed its second consecutive OVC regular season crown and the No. 1 seed while SIUE is the No. 2 seed. The Redhawks earned a first-round bye. Southern Indiana finished the season as the No. 3 after serving as the final seed a year ago. Lindenwood is the No. 4 seed and is followed by Tennessee State, Lindenwood, Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois.

The three-day event will take place at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo.  This year marks the 48th time the women's championship has been held (it was first held in 1977).

The Leathernecks are the seven seed and open the tournament on Friday, taking on No. 2 seeded SIU-Edwardsville. Western Illinois and the Cougars met on Saturday with SIUE grabbing a 7-0 victory. The winner of Friday's match advances to Saturday's semifinal, taking on the winner of No. 3 Southern Indiana and No. 6 Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m.

The Leathernecks are led by their top two of Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Paige Grice. The pair lead the team in doubles victories with four. Grice is tied for the team lead with Anna-Evelina Trush in singles wins with five while Rossetto Diniz de Souza has three wins this spring. Agatha Carbonell also has a trio of victories. Last week, Western Illinois closed out the regular season with a pair of losses, falling at home to Lindenwood, 5-2 and 7-0 to the Cougars in Edwardsville last Saturday.
