WIU Tennis Ends Regular Season

Leathernecks drop matches to Lindenwood, SIUE, prep for OVC Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MACOMB – The Western Illinois women's tennis team closed out the regular season with a pair of matches this weekend, taking on Lindenwood on Friday in Macomb before traveling to face SIUE in Edwardsville on Saturday.

The Western Illinois women opened the week with a Friday afternoon, Senior Day defeat to Lindenwood. The Leathernecks dropped the match, 5-2.

Senior Aina Cortina-Pou picked up a win in her last homecourt match, going to a third set tiebreaker. Cortina-Pou battled back from an early first set loss to win 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (11-9). Cortina-Pou trailed in her second set but rallied back, forcing the tiebreaker. In the tiebreak, Cortina-Pou scored the final two points of the match to end the day.

Also picking up a win in tie-break fashion was Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza.

Rossetto Diniz de Souza dropped her first set 1-6, but stormed back, taking the second, 6-0. In the third, Rossetto Diniz de Souza kept her momentum rolling, winning 6-2.

Also going to a third set tiebreaker was Maria Rybka. Unfortunately for the senior, after winning her first set, Rybka fell 6-4, 4-6, 0-1.

In doubles play, Western Illinois was in each match, but Lindenwood was able to sweep the three sets to take a 1-0.

On Saturday, Western Illinois ended the regular season with a 7-0 loss to SIUE. The Cougars claimed all three doubles matches for the point. In singles play, SIUE swept past WIU winning each set in all six matches.

The Leathernecks now head to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, earning a rematch against SIUE. The Leathernecks and Cougars meet Friday at noon.
