Leathernecks Battle in Loss to Southern Indiana

WIU falls to Screaming Eagles, 5-2

MACOMB – The Western Illinois women fought to the last point on Friday and nearly pulled out a dramatic comeback, falling to Southern Indiana 5-2 in Macomb.

The Leathernecks (2-13) scratched and crawled through each match, but it was not enough against the Screaming Eagles.

USI (7-8) took two of three singles matches to grab a quick 1-0 win. The Western Illinois duo of Agatha Carbonell and Paige Grice scored WIU's doubles victory with a 6-3 win.

In singles play, USI put Western Illinois on the verge of defeat quickly, winning a pair of singles matches to go up 3-0.

The Leathernecks did not back down though as Carbonell and Grice gave WIU a fighting shot. Playing at No. 3, Carbonell picked up a dominate straight-set win, scoring a 6-2, 6-1 win. At No. 1 singles, Grice also won in straight sets, grinding out a 6-4, 6-2 win.

At No. 2 and 4 singles, USI easily won the first set, but at No. 4 singles, Anna-Evelina Trush fought back, taking the second to force a third. At No. 2 singles, Aina Cortina-Pou battled back from a first set defeat to take a late lead in the second.

Unfortunately for both Cortina-Pou and Trush, the USI opponents were able to hang on to get the wins and end the Ohio Valley Conference match with a 5-2 win.

The Leathernecks are now off for two weeks, not playing again until Senior Day on Friday, April 12 against Lindenwood. Western Illinois concludes the regular season the follow day at SIUE.
