WIU Falls 14-3 on Friday Afternoon

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois baseball team fell to the UT Martin Skyhawks on Friday morning 14-3. The 14-3 loss moves the Leathernecks to 1-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play and 5-15 overall.

Kyle Rosenfeld took the bump in game two for the Leathernecks and came out dealing as he tallied three strikeouts in the first half inning. Western Illinois offense found early success as Liam Bushey lined a two-out double at the bottom of the first. Both teams were unsuccessful, bringing across zero runs in the first two innings. UT Martin found its way on the scoreboard at the top of the third inning as they singled to start the half inning and followed it up with a two-run home run. The Skyhawks padded their lead with a base-clearing two-run double. Western Illinois stayed poise as they put together multiple base runners in the scoring position in the third but stranded them on second and third.

The Skyhawks put together a pair of walks and a single, adding two insurance runs as they pushed their lead out to 6-0 after four innings. Western Illinois started to chip away at the six-run deficit in the seventh inning. Brock Lummus start the half inning with a leadoff double down the left field line, sneaking it past a diving third baseman. After a fly-out, Lummus advanced to third place on a ground-out by Chris Hege. With two outs, the Leathernecks loaded the bases on a hit by a pitch to Maxton Polad and a walk to Bushey. Grant Palmer delivered as he muscled a pitch on the hands into right field, scoring two as the Leathernecks cut the Skyhawk lead down to 6-2.

UT Martin responded with a combined eight runs over the eighth and ninth innings, leading 14-2 in the final half-inning. WIU did not go down quietly; Polad and Bushey both worked one-out walk. Palmer grounded into a fielder's choice, erasing Bushey from the base paths. Palmer swiped second base as WIU had two runners in scoring position. Kyree Alexander drove in Polad with an infield single to third base as WIU trailed 14-3. UT Martin would get a final ground out to end the game 14-3.

Kyle Rosenfeld tied his career high with seven strikeouts over three innings. Western Illinois scattered eight hits around eight different batters. Adam Juran, Liam Bushey, and Brock Lummus all had extra-base hits. Western Illinois found eight free passes to first base, walking five times and getting hit three.

The Leathernecks and Skyhawks finish their three-game series with a Saturday rubber match set for 1:00 p.m.
