Western Women Win at Coe

Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Western Illinois women's tennis team went on the road Saturday night and picked up a win, topping Coe College 8-1 in Cedar Rapids.

The Leathernecks had a strong start to the match, sweeping all three doubles matches. Western Illinois did not drop a set in doubles play.

The duo of Paige Grice and Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, prevailing 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, the pairing of Agatha Carbonell and Maria Rybka also were victorious, winning 8-2. The team of Aina Cortina-Pou and Anna-Evelina Trush completed the perfect swing, winning 8-1.

In singles, Western Illinois was nearly as dominant, winning five of six matches and only dropping two sets.

Rossetto Diniz de Souza started the Western winning party at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 6-3. Grice, at No. 2 singles, followed that with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Carbonell, who moved up the lineup from No. 3 to No. 4 singles, made it three wins for the Leathernecks, winning her match 6-1, 6-2. Maria Rybka, playing No. 4, also picked up her second win of the day, adding to the WIU lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Trush gave Western Illinois its eighth point, winning at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-3.

The victory improves the Leatherneck record to 2-7 this winter/spring season. The squad is next in action on Wednesday, hosting St. Louis University.
