Luna, Wools Lead the Way in Pair of Saturday Victories

Maria Luna drove in half the Leathernecks’ runs on Saturday, while Lillie Wools pitched a complete game shutout vs. Bellarmine.

ST. CHARLES, MO. - Western Illinois swept their doubleheader against Green Bay and Bellarmine as they opened up the Lindenwood Invite on Saturday afternoon.

Emily Price started in game one, as she opened up the game vs. Green Bay putting away the Phoenix in order. Green Bay took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, hitting four singles in the frame.

The WIU bats got going in the second as well. Bella Alvarez led things off with a single, and Maria Luna drove her in with a double to get the Leathernecks on the board. Valerie Combs then knocked in Luna with a single to cut the lead to one. With one runner on, Megan Leonard tripled to tie the game, the first of her career as a Leatherneck. Malia Robertson singled up the middle to give the Leathernecks a 4-3 lead exiting the second.

Western added a run in the third inning, as Luna picked up her second RBI of the day when she batted in Rylee Boone to extend the lead. Price got through the Phoenix without allowing a run until the fifth when the Phoenix cut the deficit in half with a sacrifice fly.

Raven Morrison entered the game in the sixth and pitched the rest of the way without allowing a run, ensuring a Leatherneck victory. Maria Luna finished game one three-for-three at the plate with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored. Malia Robertson went three-for-four with one RBI and fellow freshman Valerie Combs went two-for-three with a double.

Game two of the day saw the Leathernecks take on Bellarmine, but there were only nine hits in the game between the two teams. Lillie Wools took the mound for the second game, pitched a complete game shutout, and struck out eight. It was Wools' second complete game of the season without allowing an earned run. Wools did not allow multiple baserunners in any inning, as she only allowed three hits and no walks throughout the game.

The game was scoreless until the sixth frame, when a sacrifice fly from Luna drove in Rylee Boone to give the Leathernecks a 1-0 lead. Western Illinois tallied six hits in game two, with Gabriela Drager going two-for-three in the game. Raven Morrison also tallied multiple hits, going two-for-two at the plate.

Western will look to repeat their victorious day on Sunday when the Leathernecks take on Green Bay and Bellarmine at 10 AM and 12 PM in St. Charles.
