Leathernecks End Opening Weekend on High Note

Western Illinois defeated Northern Iowa 7-3 in a Sunday evening matchup.

CEDAR FALLS, IA - Western Illinois entered Sunday's matchup hungry for a win. The Leatherneck bats started hot, and great performances from pitchers Raven Morrison and Emily Price ensured that Western would not leave Cedar Falls without a win.

Head coach Alisa Goler emphasized the pitching today in today's big win, saying "Raven & Emily threw their hearts out for us today." On the other side of the ball, strong showings from the Leatherneck bats, including a 3-3 performance from Rylee Boone, 2-3 from Bella Alvarez, and 3 RBIs from Malia Robertson all contributed to a Western Illinois offense that scored seven runs off of 11 hits. "That was a total team win," said Goler.

Western started off in the top of the first with four straight singles, as Sophia Sanchez, Rylee Boone, Gabriela Drager, and Bella Alvarez helped engineer a perfect start for the Leathernecks, getting on the board for a 1-0 lead. With two outs and a pair of runners in scoring position, Freshman Malia Robertson came to the plate and smacked a double to left field that scored both runners. Western would head to the bottom half of the frame with a 3-0 lead.

Leatherneck starting pitcher, Raven Morrison, forced two groundouts to start the bottom of the first, but a handful of walks led to Northern Iowa trimming the lead to one.

The second was another big inning for Western, as the Leathernecks would score three runs on two hits, those being singles from Boone and Beth Pavy. Western took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the second, as a pair of strikeouts from Morrison left the Panthers scoreless in the frame.

Morrison went through the third unscathed as well, before the Leathernecks added an insurance run in the fourth, as Maria Luna's RBI on a fielder's choice made it a 7-2 ballgame.

The Panthers would get a pair of singles in the fourth, leaving Morrison to be replaced by Emily Price. Northern Iowa would score one run before Price shut them down with a strikeout.

Price would shut down the Panther offense for the rest of the night, allowing one single in the fifth, and one in the seventh. With one out and two on in the seventh, Price struck out the final two batters to seal the game for the Leathernecks. She would finish the night allowing three hits and a walk, and fanned five batters over 3.2 innings pitched.

A great win over a solid UNI squad, Goler noted "Huge win for our program. So happy for and proud of our group."

Coming up, Western embarks on a 10-day road trip, starting off with taking on Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a three game series next weekend.
