Macomb, Ill- WIU dropped their first round matchup of the OVC Volleyball Tournament against Morehead State at Houck Field House in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The Leathernecks were led by Elizabeth Ziegler who contributed 7 kills with a hitting percentage of .385. Keyana Cruse and Brittany Wulf each added five kills with Cruse contributing defensively with 10 digs and 2 blocks. WIU lost 3 sets to none (24-26, 15-25, 19-25), concluding their effort with a record of 17-13 overall.
Set 1:
WIU showed promise early, pushing the first set into extra points but fell short at 24-26. Despite 13 kills in this set, the team hit .162, their best offensive showing of the match.
Set 2:
WIU struggled to maintain momentum in the second set, only registering three kills and hitting -.179 as Morehead State capitalized on errors. The Leathernecks managed four blocks in the set but couldn't close the gap, falling 15-25.
Set 3:
In the final set, WIU bounced back slightly, with 10 kills and a .100 hitting percentage. Despite their efforts, they couldn't outpace Morehead State, dropping the set 19-25.
Overall, WIU struggled offensively as they hit just .042 as a team and committed 22 attack errors. They tallied 6 total blocks and 4 service aces but were unable to overcome Morehead State's balanced offense and strong net presence.
Despite the loss, the Leathernecks won the most games in a single season (17) since 2005 and also tied for the most wins in conference play (11) in program history.
