Men’s Soccer Drops Away Contest to Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. - Just a little over a week ago, Western Illinois University Men's Soccer was riding a three-match win streak as they entered OVC play, their first season in the new conference. Now three matches into the OVC, the Leathernecks find themselves at the bottom of the conference, after dropping a Sunday match to Incarnate Word.

Western Illinois took their first lead in an Ohio Valley Conference match in the 21st minute when Diego Porras netted his third goal of the season, joining Xavier Gagnon (3) and Liam Gainey (5) as Leathernecks with three or more goals on the season. Porras shifted his way through the Cardinal defense on the goal, as his dribbling skills have been a sight to see throughout the season.

Porras' early goal was the highlight of the match for WIU though, as Incarnate Word equalized just six minutes later. The Cardinals dominated the shot battle, winning it 11-4 in the first half and 22-5 in the match. UIW had three players with four shot attempts, while WIU had no players with multiple shots on the day.

Incarnate Word took seven corners in the second half before scoring the game-winner in the 79th minute. Leatherneck keeper Alexis Michaud played excellent throughout the match, making nine saves, but the Cardinal attack was simply too strong for the Leatherneck defense.

Western Illinois opens the home conference season on Thursday in a rematch with Liberty.
