Cookville, TN - WIU volleyball lost in three sets this afternoon to Tennessee Tech by scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-19. The Leathernecks were very quiet offensively as they had 22 kills as a team with Keyana Cruse having a team-high five kills. The defense would shine as WIU would finish with eight blocks as a team to go along with 55 digs. Julianna Schmidt had five blocks and Grace Nichols had three of her own while Karli Wenzel finished with a match-high 16 digs. The Leathernecks are now 2-2 in conference play.
Set one saw Tennessee Tech go on two big runs to distance themselves from the Leathernecks. The Golden Eagles went on runs of 7-1 and 10-3 to take the first set by a score of 25-17. In set two, Julianna Schmidt and Keyana Cruse would have two block assists to tie the set at 7 early on. The two teams would trade the next several points to make the set score 16-16. Tennessee Tech would go on a 9-5 run to close out the second set and win by a score of 25-21.
In set three, the Leathernecks would have runs of 5-1 and 5-2 tying the set at 11. During the 5-1 run, Grace Ulatowski would have a kill followed by a Grace Nichols and Keyana Cruse block which then led to a Cruse kill. Tennessee Tech would have runs of their own later in the set eventually taking the set by a score of 25-19.
WIU will play again tomorrow afternoon as they will finish up their road trip with another match against Tennessee Tech. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
