Western Prepares for Non-Conference Clash with Northern Kentucky

Previous matchup: Western Illinois and Northern Kentucky have squared off three times in men's soccer. Western holds a 1-1-1 record against the Norse in matchups dating back to 2012. In 2022, NKU and WIU played to a 1-1 tie, in a match that was played in Macomb. Current Leatherneck midfielder Jack Immesoete picked up an assist in the draw.

Scouting the opponents: Northern Kentucky has had a tough stretch in the past few weeks, with an 1-4-0 record in the team's past 5 games. The Horizon League squad picked up their lone win of the season at Oakland on September 16th. The Norse have accumulated a 1-4-3 record so far in 2023. Grad student Sam Robinson has had a strong start to the season, scoring four goals in eight matches. 

So far this season: The Leathernecks have so far opened the season with a 1-6-1 record. After starting the year 0-5-1, Western picked up a big 2-1 win on September 16 against Eastern Illinois. Western lost 8-0 in its first Summit League match, when they hosted Oral Roberts this past Saturday. 

Players to watch: Two freshman, Xavier Gagnon and Diego Porras, scored the goals in Western's lone win vs. Eastern Illinois. Fellow newcomer Oskar Grevelius assisted Gagnon's header in the match. Keeper Youssou Ouendeno has had a solid start to the season. Ouendeno has made 26 saves on the season in just 6 matches played. 

What's next: Western will resume Summit League play on Saturday when the Leathernecks take on Omaha. Western returns home on October 7th to take on St. Thomas.
