Leathernecks Fall to Southern Utah

Western Illinois fights to the end vs. Thunderbirds

CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Western Illinois football team gave Southern Utah a tussle for three quarters, but key mistakes in the final quarter and throughout the game proved too much to overcome as the Leathernecks dropped a road contest at Southern Utah, 37-17.

The Leathernecks trailed 17-3 in the second quarter, but the defense was able to stand up and the offense picked up the pace as Western forced a 17-17 tie at intermission.

Matt Morrissey connected with Jaylin Jackson for a 44-yard score to make it a 17-10 SUU lead after an interception by KJ Coleman.

On the next Thunderbird possession, Western forced a three and out. On the ensuing WIU drive, Ludovick Choquette tied the contest on a one-yard run.

The Leathernecks had a chance to take the lead going into the half after a Ryan Crandall interception, but a missed field goal left the score tied at the break.

In the third quarter, defense would dominate as neither team could get much going until a nine-yard touchdown pass with 1:26 to go in the third gave SUU a lead it would not relinquish.

In the fourth, much like the third, the Leathernecks could not find an answer as a pair of drives ended in interceptions, one which was returned for a touchdown and put the game away.

Western Illinois now heads into its bye week. The next time the Leathernecks play is October 7 at North Dakota.
