Western to Open Summit League Play for One Last Time

Previous matchup: Western lost 8-0 in last year's matchup vs. Oral Roberts, the largest win in series history. Historically, the Leathernecks hold a 12-8-1 record against the Golden Eagles. The Leathernecks held a 6-game unbeaten streak against Oral Roberts from 2016 until 2020. 

Scouting the opponents: Oral Roberts has opened the season with a 4-2-1 record, with a big win against a ranked Tulsa squad, and most recently a loss at Saint Louis. In the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, Oral Roberts received 5 votes as they just missed the top 25. The Golden Eagles are led by junior forward Luis Flores, who has scored 5 goals in 7 matches so far. 

So far this season: The Leathernecks have so far opened the season with a 1-5-1 record. After starting the year 0-5-1, Western picked up a big 2-1 win last Saturday against Eastern Illinois. Western is currently tied for second in the Summit League in goals allowed, showing that the Leathernecks have been one of the league's best defensive teams. 

Players to watch: Two freshman, Xavier Gagnon and Diego Porras, scored the goals in last Saturday's match vs. Eastern Illinois. Fellow newcomer Oskar Grevelius assisted Gagnon's header in the match. Keeper Youssou Ouendeno has had a solid start to the season. Ouendeno has allowed 5 goals in 5 games, and made 21 saves on the season

What's next: Western will take on Northern Kentucky on Tuesday before resuming conference play on Saturday to take on Omaha.
