Leathernecks Fall at Lindenwood

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois fell to Lindenwood University in straight sets on Wednesday (Sept. 20) night in St. Charles, MO. The Leathernecks fall to 1-1 in OVC play and 2-9 overall.

SET 1
Elizabeth Ziegler got WIU on the scoreboard as her kill would cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Lindenwood would pull ahead 8-6 before WIU would go on a 4-0 run. Keyana Cruse would start the streak of three straight kills to give the Leathernecks a 9-8 advantage. A service ace by Karli Wenzel would finish off the run and give WIU their largest lead at 10-8. Cruse would be back in the action as her fourth kill of the set would stop a Lions 4-0 run, cutting the deficit back to one at 12-11. Lindenwood would extend their lead multiple times back out to three, but WIU had an answer. Julianna Schmidt would get the kill to cut the Lion's lead to one at 16-15, Kaitlyn Wickersheim would have an ace, and then a Lions attack error tied the set at 18. Lindenwood finished the set on a 7-2 run to claim the first set 25-20.

SET 2
The Lions came out in attack mode in the second set, starting on a 7-2 run, causing WIU to burn their first timeout. Out of the break, Kennedy Bauer would find the floor giving herself a kill. Down 11-3, Brittany Wulf ended a 4-0 Lions run with a kill. Wulf did not stop there, sparking a 3-0 run with an ace, cutting the deficit to five, 11-6. Grace Kremer, Bauer, Schmidt, and Cruse all had kills in the second set to bring WIU within five points. Down 22-14, Schmidt's kill sparked a 5-1 run, which saw another Wenzel ace and a kill by Kremer. WIU could not cut into the Lindenwood lead anymore as the Lions took set two 25-19.

SET 3
The third set saw only one tie at 2-2. The Lions pulled in front early and did not look back. WIU would get their first offensive point in the third set as Wulf would get a kill to make the score 6-9. Teams would trade points until Lindenwood used 2-0 spurts to pull in front 17-10. Both teams would change points as the Lions took set three 25-17

Maggie Craker had herself a double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs on the night. Brittany Wulf was the only other Leatherneck to hit double digits in a statistical category with ten kills. Karli Wenzel led the way in service aces with two, and the Leathernecks as a team had four. WIU totaled six blocks on the day, with Schmidt, Cruse, and Wulf all tallying a solo block.

WIU will take the next week and a half off before traveling to Morehead State on Sept. 29-30.
