Leathernecks Take Tough Loss vs. Illinois State

The Redbirds took home a 4-1 victory on Sunday

NORMAL, IL -- The Leathernecks traveled to Normal on Sunday to play Illinois State, a match that proved to be all Redbirds. Haley Glover scored all 4 in a match that ended with a 4-1 score. Leatherneck forward Kelsi McThenia scored the lone goal for the Leathernecks, a 49th minute header that came off of a cross from fullback Rita Moran.

Illinois State started off the scoring early, as Glover had a brace by the 12th minute. She picked up the hat trick in the 27th minute, but things would start to look better for the Leathernecks after a Redbird was sent off in the 33rd minute for a hair-pulling incident. Moran would leave the rest of the half with injury, but would return in the second.

Knowing they only had ten players for the two-thirds of the match saw Western put lots of pressure on ISU in spurts, leading to a lot of opportunities, but the Leathernecks were not able to score in the first half, as they went into the break down 3-0.

McThenia capitalized with the Leathernecks having the extra-woman advantage and hammered a header into the back of the net that would give Western some life. The Redbird defense would remain strong after the goal though, as it would be the only one they allowed in the match. ISU nabbed a 4th goal in the 70th that would all but seal the game from the Redbirds.

A major reason WIU struggled defensively was due to the absence of two-time OVC GK of the week, Isabel Navas Rodriguez. McFarland, Wisconsin native Avery Weaver started the match in net in place of Rodriguez, which was a big ask of the freshman.

Looking ahead, the Leathernecks have a 10 day break before their next game, where they welcome the Redhawks of SEMO to open OVC play.
