Leathernecks Lose Close One in Green Bay

| By:

Western Illinois lost 1-0 to the Phoenix on Sunday

Box Score Green Bay showed a lot of pressure against the Leathernecks early on, particularly when Western was in their own third. Green Bay tallied four shots in the first twelve minutes of action. Ultimately, this pressure led to the Phoenix scoring the first goal of the match in the 17th minute, after Youssou Ouendeno made many saves to deny Green Bay of a goal. Ouendeno made four saves in the first half, and tacked on one more in the second.

In the second half, the Leathernecks flipped the switch by putting the pressure on Green Bay, as freshman forward Diego Porras dribbled through the Phoenix defense. However, it only resulted in a couple shots on target, as Western was unable to find the net.

Western's pressure early in the second half led the Leathernecks not allowing a Green Bay shot on goal until thirty minutes into the second half. A major reason Western was able to keep the Phoenix on their toes in their own third was Coach Johnson's decision to move Kyle Owen from defender to forward. Some other adjustments led to the Leathernecks looking better in the second half of play, but were unable to score, as they lost to the Phoenix, 0-1.

The Leathernecks will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 1, as they travel to Des Moines to take on Drake. Then, WIU comes home to play Lindenwood on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
