Previous matchup: The Leathernecks have had the upper hand against the Panthers in years past, putting together a 10-4-2 record against UNI. Northern Iowa is 2-2-2 all-time when they play in Macomb. Western has strung together three straight wins in the past 3 meetings against UNI, dating back to 2018. Western won 4-3 in Cedar Falls in the last matchup back in 2021.

So far this season: Western has opened the season with a 1-1 record, losing 3-0 to Northern Illinois at home, and most recently defeating the Chicago State Cougars on the road 1-0 on Sunday. New face Sachiko Gamo scored the winner, leading the Leathernecks to victory.

Scouting the opponent: UNI has starting off strong, winning its first two matches with a total goal differential of 10-0. They started with a 1-0 win against St. Thomas, followed by a 9-0 thrashing of Viterbo. 9 different players have recorded a goal for the Panthers, with forward Lauren Heinsch being the only player to get two in the back of the net. Goalkeeper Caitlin Richards has recorded 7 saves across 135 minutes of action this season.

Players to watch: Senior Emmy Ellington and Grad student Malerie Rohweder have played every minute of both games so far for the Leathernecks, being the only non-GK players to amass this feat. Freshman Alanna Pennington played the full 90 minutes against Chicago State, being the only freshman on the team to do so. These three should see a lot of action for the Leathernecks across the remainder of the season.

What's next: Following Thursday's match, the Leathernecks will travel back to Chicago the following week, this time for a matchup with Loyola Chicago. The match will be on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. Western will then travel to play Milwaukee on Sunday, Sep. 3rd.
