MACOMB -- The Leathernecks won the final of their 3 exhibition matches on Saturday, with a 2-0 vs. Quincy University. A match that saw both sides come out aggressive early saw Western score 2 1st half goals, which would prove to be enough. Winning their second exhibition of the 2023 season, the Leathernecks look to start the season with a win against NIU in DeKalb next Thursday.
The Hawks put pressure on Western early, tallying two shots in the first two minutes of the game. Freshman forward
Xavier Gagnon then opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finishing off a beautiful ball from fellow freshman
Diego Porras. Quincy saw many chances in the remainder of the first half, with 5 corners taken by the Hawks from Gagnon's goal until the break.
With under thirty seconds in left in the first half, the Leathernecks were able to draw a corner that was taken quickly by
Joel McIntyre. The freshman from Peoria whipped in a ball with little time left, but 5th year standout
Kyle Owen rocketed a header into the bottom left corner of the net with only 4 seconds to go in the half.
That would be all the scoring that was needed for Western, as they were able to halt all of Quincy's attacks in the second half as well. Thanks to a 3-man keeper rotation starting with
Ramy Aita, followed by
Carson Jeffery, and ending with
Youssou Ouendeno, the Leathernecks were able to get the clean sheet.
The Leathernecks will open regular season play this Thursday against Northern Illinois on the road, and a match next Sunday in Green Bay against the Phoenix.
