Western Illinois Falls to UND

Saturday's game officially concludes Western Illinois' 2023 season.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Western Illinois softball played Saturday afternoon (May 6), falling 9-4 in a road game against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. The result officially concludes Western Illinois' 2023 regular season after a Kansas City victory yesterday afternoon that moved the Roos move up one spot in the standings.

North Dakota opened the game's scoring early on with two runs in the first and two more in the third. Western looked close to cutting into the lead in the fourth after loading the bases but was unable to convert, and the Fighting Hawks led 4-0 after four innings of play.

The sixth proved pivotal for Western Illinois, who exploded for four runs on six hits in the inning alone. After Gabriela Drager singled to lead things off, Kaylee Ketcherside hit an RBI double to center that was followed by a Piper Foote single to cut the lead in half. The momentum continued as Rylee Boone and Georgia Rea hit back-to-back singles to load the bases for Bella Alvarez, who singled through the right side to score Boone and Foote and level the game back up at four apiece.

The Fighting Hawks quickly responded, however, putting five runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning to retake a lead that would hold for the rest of the game, and it went final at 9-4.

Drager (3-4), Foote (2-2, two walks) and Georgia Rea (3-4) would fuel the team's offensive efforts, which finished with four runs on 10 total hits and three walks. Four different players came in to score while seven different Leathernecks recorded a hit. Maria Luna led all players with six putouts and an assist on seven total chances, while Savannah Rodriguez and Emily Price combined to strikeout three Fighting Hawks across six innings of work.

Saturday's game officially concluded Western Illinois' 2023 season as Kansas City moved up one spot in the standings with a victory yesterday; St. Thomas remains ineligible for the Summit League tournament as the school finishes its Division-I transition.
