Western Illinois kicks off 2023 season on Friday

MACOMB – After nearly four months since their last game, the Western Illinois football team is back on the field on Friday, beginning the spring campaign and kicking off the 2023 season. Starting Friday, the Leathernecks participate in 14 practices before concluding spring football with the spring game on Friday, April 21.

"We are very excited to get on the field (Friday)," coach Myers Hendrickson said. "This group has had great energy and worked extremely hard over the winter workouts. We have been making big strides in the weight room and in the classroom, now we are excited to get back on Hanson Field."

The spring game is also paired with the program's golf outing, the following day, Saturday, April 22. Practices will be closed with the exception of the spring game on April 21.

With plenty of returnees and new faces on the coaching staff and roster, Hendrickson and company are excited to pick up where they left off from last season and see the gains made during the offseason strength and conditioning programs.

"We will have some tremendous position battles in all three phases this spring," the coach said. "I am excited to see us compete and improve in each of our 15 spring-ball opportunities. We will have a big focus on fundamentals this spring. We will continue to work and prepare for our 2023 season."
