Leathernecks drop match at Northeastern State

Box Score TAHLEQUAH, OK – The Western Illinois women's tennis team fell on the road Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 7-0 match to Northeastern State University in Oklahoma.

The Leathernecks went 0-6 in singles play on the day while dropping doubles matches 3-0. The loss puts Western Illinois' overall record at 5-8.

Maria Rybka and Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza each nearly pulled off a win in singles, but fell in third-set tiebreakers.

After winning her first set, 6-4, Rybka fell in the next set 3-6. Rybka dropped the tiebreaker 10-5. Rossetto Diniz de Souza also took her first set, winning 6-4, but she fell in the second set 6-7 (4-10) and in a third-set tiebreaker, 10-3.

In other singles matches, Paige Grice (0-6, 0-6), Lorena Castellanos (3-6, 2-6), Aina Cortina-Pou (4-6, 2-6) and Lucky Kancherla (4-6, 1-6) each dropped their matches in straight sets.

In the doubles portion, Northeastern State swept its way to the point, winning all three matches. The duo of Grice and Castellanos fell 7-5 while the pair of Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Rybka lost 6-1 and the team of Cortina-Pou and Kancherla dropped their match 6-4.

The Leathernecks are back in action on Saturday afternoon, opening Summit League play in Tulsa at Oral Roberts. The match is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. After the spring break trip, WIU remains on the road, taking on Quincy next Tuesday in Quincy before playing a scheduled match in Macomb on Saturday, March 25 against Denver.
