Western Illinois drops Final Games at MTSU Invitational

Leathernecks Drop Final Games at MTSU Invitational Leatherneck softball fell to Appalachian State and Middle Tennessee State on Sunday (March 12)..

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Western Illinois softball concluded the 2023 Middle Tennessee State Invitational on Sunday (March 12), falling to Appalachian State and the tournament hosts. The Leathernecks continue this year's spring break road trip with a doubleheader at Tennessee Tech on Tuesday (March 15) before playing single games at Murray State and Illinois later in the week.

Game 1: Mountaineers 3, Leathernecks 0
Appalachian State found its way on the board early, scoring two on an RBI single in the first inning. The Leathernecks came close to a counter in the second, as Kaylee Ketcherside walked and Riley Eagan later doubled to put runners on second and third. The Mountaineers, however, got out of the jam and maintained a 2-0 advantage.

Appalachian State added one more run in the third and the Western Illinois bats remained quiet the rest of the way, finishing the game with two hits thanks to Eagan's double and a Piper Foote single; Ketcherside drew the lone base on balls while Savannah Rodriguez found her way to first base after getting hit by a pitch.

In the circle, Emily Price threw all seven innings and finished with a line of eight hits, three runs (three earned), two walks and eight strikeouts across 31 batters faced and 108 total pitches.

Game 2: Middle Tennessee State 6, Western Illinois 1
WIU created chances early during game two, putting runners in scoring position during the first inning, but wasn't able to convert. Though MTSU put a run on the board early with a sacrifice fly in the first, the first four innings proved to be a balanced affair, and Western came right back in the fourth inning off the bat of Georgia Rea.

With two outs in the inning, Rea stepped to the plate and smacked the first pitch she saw over the wall in left field, leveling the game at one and recording her first home run of the 2023 season. After the Blue Raiders went 0-3 in the bottom half of the inning, both teams entered the fifth inning level at one. WIU was once again able to put runners in position during the fifth – loading the bases thanks to singles from Kayla DePoorter and Gabriela Drager and a Maria Luna walk – but was unable to convert.

The tournament hosts took a one run lead in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice and added four insurance runs in the sixth inning to seal the 6-1 result.

Drager finished 2-3 with a walk for her sixth multi-hit game of the season and combined with Rea (1-3), DePoorter (1-1), Savannah Rodriguez (1-3), and Bella Alvarez (1-3) for six hits in the game, while Maria Luna walked twice. Rodriguez also started in the circle and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs (two earned) while striking out one. Kathryn McChristy finished with 0.2 innings pitched and didn't allow a hit.

Western Illinois softball will remain in Tennessee for its next two games, continuing the spring break road trip with a doubleheader at Tennessee Tech on Tuesday (March 14) before facing Murray State on Wednesday (March 15) and Illinois this Saturday (March 18).
