WIU Falls to No. 24 Texas Tech

Slavens, Botaletto each have 3 RBI

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois fell in its series finale against Texas Tech on Sunday (Feb. 26 ) afternoon. WIU would grab an early 4-0 lead before the Red Raiders would have 14 unanswered runs to help them take a 14-8 victory.

The offense stayed quiet in the first inning for the first time this weekend. Texas Tech retired WIU one, two, and three to start Sunday's ball game. Texas Tech would find similar success. Aron Harrington would get the first two Red Raiders to ground out before Texas Tech would assemble back-to-back singles to get a runner in scoring position. Harrington would do the rest as he would find the bottom of the zone for out number three.

WIU would get the offense going with two out in the second. Chase VanDerGinst would draw a two-out walk to get it going. After VanDerGinst stole second base, Adam Juran would walk to put runners on first and second with two outs. Both runners would be in motion again as they complete the double steal to move into scoring position. Max Slavens would then drive VanDerGinst and Juran in with a single to right field to give WIU the 2-0 lead. Ricky Pospisil would keep the line moving as he would get a two-out single. Nick Mitchell would add more RBIs to his weekend total as he would go down and pull a ball down the first base line for a 2-run RBI triple to extend WIU lead to four. Aron Harrington would return in the bottom half and shut down Texas Tech. He would get back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Texas Tech's offense would start to wake up as they would get eight runs in the bottom of the third and five more in the fourth to take a 13-4 lead. Western Illinois would keep the Red Raiders quiet in the fifth as Eric Cunning would get a pop-out to end the inning. Texas Tech would add one in the sixth with an RBI double.

WIU would cut into the deficit as Adam Juran would lead off the seventh with a double down the right field line. Max Slavens gets his third RBI of the day as he sends a 1-2 pitch down the left field line for back-to-back doubles. Ricky Pospisil would walk, and Nick Mitchell would reach on an error to load the bases. Derek Botaletto would take advantage of the Texas Tech error lining a ball down the left field line for a base-clearing double, making it a 14-8 ball game.

The defense would keep WIU in it in the bottom of the seventh. Botaletto would dive to his right and then throw across the diamond for the first out. Kyree Alexander would keep the highlight reel plays going as he would catch a line drive and then throw it back to first for the double play to keep the deficit at six. In the bottom of the eight, WIU would sit the Red Raiders down in order as Eric Cunning would get two of his four strikeouts to end the inning.

Max Slavens led the offensive charge in the series finale, going 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Derek Botaletto also had three RBI on his double. Nick Mitchell had another impressive performance as he drove in two runs and scored. Chase VanDerGinst stole two bases to lead WIU. WIU, as a team, had four stolen bases and four walks.
