WIU Softball Splits Opening Day of Lindenwood Invite

Leathernecks fell in game one before defeating Green Bay, 4-2.

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Western Illinois softball played in the first day of the 2023 Lindenwood Invite on Saturday (Feb. 25), falling 3-1 to the tournament hosts before defeating Green Bay 4-2 in the second game of the day. The Leathernecks will play a doubleheader against Lindenwood tomorrow afternoon to wrap up the tournament.

Game 1: Lions 3, Leathernecks 1
Savannah Rodriguez started and went the distance in game one, pitching six innings while allowing four hits, three runs (three earned) and striking out four across 93 total pitches. She had a huge inning in the third, striking out the side to maintain a tied ballgame but Lindenwood would use a two-RBI double in the fifth inning to take a lead.

After Lindenwood opened the scoring in the first, Western Illinois got on the board in the second inning. Rodriguez got on base to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error before Gabriela Drager singled in the next at-bat. After Drager stole second, Bella Alvarez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Two batters later, Piper Foote hit a ball to the Lion shortstop that was misplayed and Rodriguez scored to level the game at one. Drager and Alvarez combined with Jorja Hudson and Maria Luna to finish with four total hits.

Game 2: Leathernecks 4, Phoenix 2
Emily Price was in the circle for game two and continued her strong start to the 2023 campaign, throwing her third complete game of the season and earning her second victory in the process. Through seven innings in the circle, Price allowed just four hits and two runs (one earned), walking two and striking out four hitters while throwing 101 total pitches. Through five appearances, she's now tied for second-fewest earned runs by any Summit League pitcher while boasting 29 total strikeouts – a total that is sixth-best in the league.

Bella Alvarez opened the scoring with a first-inning RBI single that scored Rylee Boone. Green Bay would tie things up in the second and even take a lead in the top of the third, but Western's offense immediately responded, scoring runs on three-consecutive at-bats in the bottom half of the inning. Alvarez once again drove in a run, this time on an RBI triple to right, and scored on the next at-bat as Jorja Hudson hit another triple down the right field line. Foote then stepped up with a single to center that saw Jorja Hudson score and Western was ahead, 4-2, after three. With Price dealing in the circle Western Illinois would cruise to a 4-2 victory for the team's fifth win of the 2023 season.

The team is back in action tomorrow (Feb. 26), playing a doubleheader against Lindenwood. First pitch for game one is slated for 2 p.m.
