Leathernecks Fall in Series Finale

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team fell in the series finale against Southern Indiana on Sunday (Feb. 19) afternoon. The Leathernecks fall to 1-3 on the season.

Aron Harrington got the ball to start the final game of the four-game series against Southern Indiana. Harrington got things going in the first as he would get the first batter he faced to ground out to second. The Eagles would get a runner third, but two more ground balls would end the threat in the first. Nick Mitchell would keep up his impressive opening weekend as he would lead off the bottom of the first with a leadoff single. Mitchell would keep the feet moving as he swiped second base. WIU would strand Mitchell at second to end the first. WIU's defense would be on display in the second. After a leadoff walk, Adam Juran would throw out the USI baserunner. Harrington would do the rest, getting a strikeout to end the inning.

USI would strike first at the top of the third as they hit a solo shot to left field. WIU would have an answer in the bottom half. Mitchell would have his second hit of the day to set the stage for Kyree Alexander. Alexander would take a 0-1 pitch and put it up in the jet stream for his second home run of the weekend, giving WIU the 2-1 lead.

USI would try to get back into the game in the third, but Harrington would get a ground ball right to Alexander. Alexander would step on second and throw it 90ft to first for the 4-3 double play to end the frame. WIU would add another run as J.R. Heavilin would start the inning with a single to center. He would advance on a Derek Botaletto sac bunt to second. After getting to third on a ground ball, he would score on a passed ball, extending WIU's lead to two.

Cam Howard would come in for relief of Harrington to start the fifth. He would get out before USI put together a couple of singles to cut the deficit to one (3-2). Max Slavens would end the threat of anyone else scoring as he would throw out his third USI runner of the weekend at third. Jack Bell would enter the game to register the last out as he would strike out the Eagle's clean-up hitter.

The offenses would go quiet until the top of the 8th as USI would get a walk, then a hit, and another walk to load the bases. They would capitalize on the walks as they would have a base-clearing triple to take a 5-3 lead. WIU would get one back in the bottom of the eighth as Kyree Alexander scores on a Derek Botaletto fielder choice. WIU would load the bases in the ninth but would fall short falling 5-4

Nick Mitchell led Leathernecks in hits tallying four hits in five plate appearances. Kyree Alexander was the other Leatherneck with multiple hits. Alexander led the way in RBIs with two.

Aron Harrington pitched 4.0 innings striking out three Eagles. Jackson Burk came into relief in the eighth, facing four total batters and striking out four.

WIU hits the road to the lone star state as they take on Texas Tech in a four-game series.
