Leathernecks Defeat Billikens At Rosemont Dome

Rylee Boone put the team ahead with a two-RBI hit in the sixth, Western concludes the tournament on Sunday (Feb. 12).

CHICAGO, Ill. - Western Illinois softball played its third game of this year's opening weekend tournament, defeating the Saint Louis Billikens 4-3 at the Rosemont Dome. Rylee Boone provided the spark Western needed with a late-game hit as Western Illinois will wrap up the tournament with two games on Feb. 12, facing Bowling Green at 9 a.m. and Detroit Mercy right after at 11 a.m.

Kathryn McChristy got the first start of her Western Illinois career and pitched three innings, allowing four hits and one run (one earned), and was replaced in the fourth inning by Maria Luna, who came in to pitch 1.2 innings while allowing one earned run and struck out her first batter as a collegiate pitcher in the bottom of the fourth.

With SLU leading 2-0 entering the top of the fifth, Western's offense stepped up to the plate and was able to plate two runners and tie the game. Bella Alvarez opened the inning with a one-out double before Rylee Boone singled. With Alivia Beard pinch running at third and Boone at second after stealing a base, Gabriela Drager and Kaylee Ketcherside hit back-to-back RBI singles to level the game with two innings to play.

With two outs in the sixth, Rylee Boone came up with the biggest play of her young collegiate career. After Maria Luna and Bella Alvarez got on-base with walks and Riley Eagan came in to pinch run for Luna, Boone cleared the bases with a hit to center field that scored Alvarez and Eagan and gave Western a 4-2 lead.

One day after throwing a perfect game, Savannah Rodriguez would close out the contest with 2.1 innings of work, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out two more opposing hitters, closing the door on the team's second victory of 2023, as the game finished 4-3 in favor of the Leathernecks.

Boone and Drager both finished 2-3 with RBI hits and combined with Rodriguez, Alvarez and Ketcherside for seven hits, while three Leathernecks drew walks. Rodrigez's late-game work in the circle resulted in her second win of the season.

Western Illinois concludes the tournament with two games on Sunday.
